He made a difference which hopefully seeds our future. I was formative to encounter him, many years ago now. – my condolences to those sorrowing at his loss …………He wrote .” the narrative function of the mind is ancient, animal and instinctive….We die every night. When we return to consciousness we are newborn. ” Awaking now to another dimension, Gillies is ar sli na firinne, anois……………………

You’d be forgiven for thinking that some of the stories you’ve heard about Gillies over the years seemed unbelievable. However, if you were lucky enough to meet him in person, you’d quickly realise that this man always chose the alternative route in life and as a result, his life made for extremely entertaining reading. We thank him for this. His loss has been deeply felt those of us who knew him, and in typical Gillies style, his life has been beautifully immortalised through his exceptional writing. Gillies Macbain, a man who unapologetically lived life by his own rules. A man who lived his life well. We’ll miss you, our dear friend. Thank you for the wonderful memories.

Deepest sympathies to all of Gillies family and loved ones! May he rest peacefully!! I’ll always remember a couple year ago on my walk to catch the school bus I came across a wallet on the road, soppy wet from the rain I checked to make sure it wasn’t an old one someone had thrown out on the road but seeing it wasn’t I closed it back up and even though it was already wet I put it in my pocket shielding it’s contents from further rain, when I got to Templetuohy village I handed it into the shop and thought nothing more of it, I was just hoping the contents wasn’t ruined and the person got it back!! I didn’t know who’s it was but going back to shop a few days later Gillies you’d left me a note, a very generous note too which I didn’t expect as to me handing in someone’s belongings was the natural thing to do, however your generous heart was full of gratitude when I met you in person, you thanked me numerous times and told me how you’d been concerned about not getting it back but was overjoyed when you’d went to the shop and it was there, told me how genuine a person I was and how it was lovely to see young people like myself with such kindness and how grateful you were that it was me that had found it that day, you were such a lovely, genuine person to talk to yourself Gillies, I’m very grateful too that I found it that day as I got to meet and talk to such a pure soul! May you rest easily now, sending my deepest of sympathies to all your loved ones, may you keep being a true gentleman forever in peace 🙏

I have just discovered the death of my friend Andrew , as I knew him . We grew up together in Lincoln from the age of 4 till 12 in the grounds of the Old Bishops Palace Lincoln where his mother was the housekeeper of the teachers training college . We had a wonderful feral childhood among acres of free space . He clearly made many people happy . I feel the loss .

  42. Garreth Byrne

You were a strange fish. When I met you at Cranagh Castle after my return from Africa in 1977 you were into organic farming. You promoted organic vegetable growing and built up a library of rare books and pamphlets on the subject. Rest in peace after a varied life well lived. Garreth Byrne, Leitrim

  43. Denise Cooke

Good night sweet Prince may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. Your old friend
