The death has occurred of

Mary Anne Fogarty (Nee Ryan)

Mary Anne Fogarty (nee Ryan), Gortacurra, Templemore, Co Tipperary, and formerly Gortnahoe. 13th of October 2026 peacefully surrounded by her loving family, after an illness very bravely borne, with many years of care and support from doctors, nurses and staff of St James Hospital.

Predeceased by her parents Bridget and John Ryan (Gortnahoe).

Deeply regretted by her loving and devoted husband Sean, her sons William, Joseph and Sean Francis and her grandchildren, Cuan, Cathal, Tiernan, Senan, Eoin, Cillian, Daniel and Caitriona, her daughters in law Aoife, Emma and Carol. Sister, Bridget Quirke (Mullinahone) Brothers, Paddy (Gortnahoe), Joe (Urlingford) and John (Straffan) Brothers in Law, Sisters in Law, Nieces, Nephews and a wide circle of friends and former pupils.

Reposing in Grey’s Funeral Home Templemore (E41 TR83) this Thursday evening from 5 pm to 7 pm. Requiem Mass on Friday at 11 am in the Church of the Sacred Heart Templemore. Interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery Templemore afterwards.

Mrs Fogarty taught me English many moons ago and I have fond memories of her poetry classes in particular and her wonderful ability to bring a poet’s words and imagery to life, Kavanagh and Heaney spring to mind. She was a beloved teacher and her enthusiasm, diligence and dedication left a lasting impression on all her students.
    I was also fortunate enough to be tutored by her in the Concern debates and I recall how she would excitedly and almost magically produce a newspaper article to suit as refutation to a sticky point or argument. She had a genuine passion for public speaking and debating but above all her compassion for those less fortunate opened our eyes to the plight of those in the developing world.
    She was the kind of teacher one could only aspire to be, both in the classroom and in the example she set as a human being.
    In latter years, I met her out and about and on the train to Dublin, and once again her kindness and genuine interest in others shone through. Condolences to all who mourn her passing.

    Mary Anne was a dedicated and inspirational teacher whose kindness, compassion and genuine care for her students touched countless lives.

    She was passionate about teaching English and Geography, instilling a love and appreciation of both subjects in the many students who were fortunate enough to be taught by her. She gave so generously of her time and talents, always striving to bring out the very best in her students, particularly the girls she mentored and encouraged through debating.

    Mary Anne also opened up the world to countless students through school trips to Europe, creating wonderful experiences, cherished memories and opportunities that extended far beyond the classroom.

    Her warmth, kindness, friendship and wonderful spirit will always be remembered and deeply missed by the entire Presentation community.

    We were privileged to have worked alongside Mary Anne for so many years. She leaves behind a lasting legacy in the hearts of her colleagues and the generations of students whose lives she enriched.
