    Cheryl Kane and Russell Osborne,
St. Mary on the Hill, Augusta, GA
    Dear, Tom, Elizabeth, & Margaret,
In 1981, as a Franciscan Sister, I was assigned to Augusta, GA. When I was hired by Fr. Jim as the Director of Religious Formation, I was so excited.
Fr. Jim taught me that spending time, listening, and being present was all that mattered.
I so loved Fr. Jim’s relationships with all of his parishioners.
Somewhere, I learned that a Holy person makes others feel good about themselves… Fr. Jim was truly a very Holy Person. He was one of the most Pastoral people I know.
We will truly miss him… I am so sad that we won’t be with him physically, but I love that he is now in the presence of our God who Jim totally loved and gave his all as a good and faithful servant.
We love you Fr. Jim…We are so grateful for the ways you impacted our lives….
You were a saint living among us.

It is with great sadness that we receive the news of the passing of an outstanding Irish/American ecumenical leader. We have known Monsignor Jim Costigan as a great Shepherd and loyal Servant of the Church. We cherish his faith, commitment and his contribution to the holiness of the Church in the world.
We pass our deepest sympathies to both the Costigan and Tierney families in Steelspark and all who mourne Fr Jim’s passing.
At Billy’s anniversary mass, he inspired us by sharing his beautifull vocation story, from St.Cronans Longfordwood in the early 50’s and his everyday experiences as a priest in the Catholic Church in the USA over the past 70 years. We quote him on the night “It is imperative, especially now during this difficult time in our Church, that we pray for our clergy and for more vocations to the priesthood”.
He joined and assisted so many families in the daily pathos we experience and must endure .
On his soul sweet Jesus have mercy.

  83. Amy Mooney, Augusta, Georgia

I’ve been sitting with his passing for a few days now and still really can’t find the words. I went down a Google rabbit hole last night and found a video where Monsignor Costigan was teaching a Savannah news channel how to make an Irish coffee in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. His big, warm voice and cheeky chuckle instantly felt like a hug.

If you had the opportunity to know him, you can probably close your eyes and hear his joyful voice – and for me and my family, that voice was always near.

Whether it was giving my mom permission to open the very first Catholic Social Services thrift store in Augusta, giving my dad the opportunity to clean the church to pay for SMS tuition, dancing a jig with us at Arts in the Heart, or saying a private mass for our entire extended family in my sister’s home for our Grannies 90th … he never missed an occasion to be there for us. He made you feel like you were the only ones; a grandfather that was always near.

Interestingly, in my Google rabbit hole, I found an article celebrating his 50th anniversary in the Tipperary newspaper. He said, “Priesthood to me is presence. When I was ordained and called to be a priest I responded to my name on that ordination day as Present and my life has been one of responding and presence to all people at all the important moments of their lives when sickness, the death of a loved one, baptisms, marriages or moments of crisis occur.”

Nothing has ever been so true.

Monsignor Costigan: you were a gem. Always present, always with a smile, always making us feel loved and cared for. Your presence will be missed immensely. Please watch down on us and give us a little sign from time to time that you’re drinking Irish coffee and doing a jig. ☘️ Thank you for everything. ☘️

I was an altar server for Monsignor Costigan in savannah, St. Peter the Apostle. He was a great man, may he rest in peace, and may the angels lead him to paradise.

  110. Renee Minardi

I was so shocked and sorry to hear of Monsignor’s passing. Jim was a dear friend to both me and my husband, Vince.
Having just been to visit Jim two weeks prior, I found him happy in his parish with family and friends, doing what he wanted to do in his retirement, celebrating Mass, visiting the school and nursing homes and being with his family. He continued always to be present to the people of God both in Ireland and the Savannah Diocese.
My deepest condolences to Margaret, Elizabeth, Tom, his sister-in-law Margaret and all of his nieces and nephews, some with whom we met on their trips to the states and while we visited Jim’s home. I will miss him terribly. I pray his soul and my Vince’s soul, will meet soon.
Until we meet again, Renee Minardi
